How to Prepare for a Massage: Everything You Need to Know

4 min read

Booking a massage is the easy part. But what should you actually do before your appointment?

If it’s your first massage, you may have questions about what to eat, what to wear, when to arrive and whether there’s anything you need to bring with you. Even if you’ve had massage treatments before, a little preparation can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed from the moment you arrive.

Whether you've booked a Swedish massage, hot stone massage, lymphatic drainage massage or another treatment at The Warwick Spa, these simple tips can help you prepare.

Don't Eat a Large Meal Immediately Before Your Massage

You don't necessarily need to avoid food before a massage, but eating a very large meal immediately beforehand may leave you feeling uncomfortable.

If you're hungry before your appointment, a lighter meal or snack may be easier to manage. Ideally, give yourself some time between eating and your treatment so you don't arrive feeling overly full.

Everyone is different, so consider what normally makes you feel comfortable.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping up with your normal fluid intake is a sensible part of preparing for your massage.

You don't need to dramatically increase how much you drink before your appointment. Simply make sure you're not arriving dehydrated, particularly if you've been out and about during warm weather.

You can also have water available after your treatment if you feel thirsty.

What Should You Wear?

There is no special outfit required for a massage.

The most important thing is that you wear something you're comfortable changing in and out of. Loose, comfortable clothing can be particularly convenient after your appointment.

During the massage itself, you will be appropriately draped, with only the area being treated exposed. You should always feel comfortable discussing any concerns about privacy or positioning with your therapist.

If you're unsure about what will happen when you arrive, don't be afraid to contact our staff.

Arrive with Enough Time

Try not to arrive at your appointment feeling rushed.

Giving yourself a few extra minutes allows you to arrive, settle in and speak to your therapist before your treatment begins.

If it's your first visit to The Warwick Spa, allowing a little additional time can be especially helpful while you get familiar with the location and appointment process.

Think About What You Want from Your Massage

Before your appointment, take a moment to consider what you'd like from your treatment.

Are you primarily looking for relaxation? Do you have areas of muscular tension you'd like your therapist to focus on? Are you sensitive to pressure? Perhaps you simply want some quiet time away from a busy schedule.

You don't need to have a detailed explanation prepared. Even a simple statement such as “I'd like a relaxing massage with gentle pressure” can help your therapist understand your preferences.

Communication Is Important

One of the biggest misconceptions about having a massage is that you aren't supposed to speak.

In reality, communication is encouraged when it comes to your comfort.

If the pressure is too strong, too light or simply not quite right, tell your therapist. The same applies if you're uncomfortable with your position, temperature or anything else during the appointment.

You don't need to worry about interrupting the treatment. Your comfort is important.

At the same time, you don't have to make conversation throughout your massage. If you'd rather relax quietly, that's perfectly fine too.

A shower before your massage isn't essential, but you may prefer to have one if it helps you feel fresh and comfortable.

If you've exercised, travelled or been out in hot weather before your appointment, showering can be particularly appealing.

The main thing is simply to arrive feeling comfortable and ready for your treatment.

Remove Jewellery Where Appropriate

Depending on the massage you're having, your therapist may ask you to remove jewellery that could get in the way of the treatment.

It's often easier to leave valuable or unnecessary jewellery at home rather than worrying about it during your appointment.

If you're unsure whether something needs to be removed, your therapist can advise you.

What About Make-Up?

If you're having a body massage, wearing make-up isn't generally an issue. However, if your treatment involves the face, you may prefer to arrive with minimal make-up so that your therapist can work comfortably and massage all the nourishing goodness into your skin,

Again, your specific treatment will determine what preparation is most appropriate.

Prepare to Slow Down

Perhaps the most important thing you can do before a massage is give yourself permission to slow down.

Try not to squeeze your appointment between a string of stressful tasks if you can avoid it. Arriving in a calmer state can make it easier to settle into the treatment.

This is one reason many people enjoy booking a massage as part of their regular self-care routine.

Whether you're travelling from Warwick itself, nearby Leamington Spa or further afield, try to give yourself enough time to enjoy the experience rather than treating your appointment as something else to rush through.

What Should You Bring?

You don't need to bring anything special to a massage. You may want to bring a bottle of water for afterwards, particularly if you're heading out for the rest of the day, but aside from that you're good!

After Your Massage

Think about what you're doing immediately after your appointment too.

If possible, allow yourself a little time before rushing into a busy schedule. You may feel relaxed after your treatment, so a few quiet minutes can be a nice way to transition back into your day.

If you've booked a deeper or more focused treatment, you may also prefer to avoid immediately following it with strenuous activity and instead having a thorough post massage nap.

Ready for Your Massage?

Preparing for a massage doesn't need to be complicated. Eat in a way that leaves you comfortable, keep up with your usual hydration, wear something practical and arrive with enough time to settle in.

Most importantly, communicate with your therapist. Whether you're booking your first Swedish massage or returning for a favourite treatment, your therapist can help make the experience comfortable and suited to your preferences.
